FOURNI

Fourni is a beautiful Listed traditional settlement with character

Fourni actually comprises three different villages; close one to another. The villages of Kastelli, Kato Chorio and Pano Chorio, all located in the homonymous fertile plain (polje) at an altitude of 320m.

The greater area comprises the hamlets of Syrmesso, Skouras, Chavgas and Chondrovolakoi. All those settlements used to be wealthy rural villages of great cultural tradition. Visitors often come across houses of Venetian architecture, proof of the area’s long history.

7km east of Neapoli and 12km west of Elounda, at the end of a remarkable sinuous route, we find the three villages of Fourni, all of them located on the provincial road network which connects Neapoli to Plaka-Elounda.

The area has dozens of chapels and Monasteries, most of them of the 16th-17th centuries. The large number of Monasteries in such a small area (Ano Mirabello) is the reason why it has been given the name “The Holy Mountain of Crete”.

The village of Kastelli is connected to the village of Kato Chorio by a magnificent 400m-long road with eucalyptuses and cypresses. To the left we find the Crafts & Cottage Industry Museum “Milopetra”.

It is a quiet village of about 180 permanent residents. It is however, the hometown of many locals in the area of Lasithi and livens up when there are festivals, religious ceremonies or when it is olive harvesting season or time to distill the local spirit “Raki’ which is made from grapes.

Fourni is a traditional mountain village situated in the eastern part of Crete, nestled in the Dikti Mountains. It is located at an altitude of approximately 800 meters above sea level, offering beautiful views of the surrounding landscapes.

The village is known for its picturesque setting, with stone houses, narrow streets, and a tranquil atmosphere. It is a great destination for nature lovers and those seeking a peaceful retreat away from the bustling tourist areas.

In Fourni, you can explore the Cretan countryside and enjoy activities such as hiking, walking, and mountain biking. The area boasts scenic trails that lead to breathtaking viewpoints and natural landmarks.

One notable attraction near Fourni is the Diktaion Antron, also known as the Dikteon Cave. According to Greek mythology, this cave is believed to be the birthplace of Zeus, the king of the gods. The cave is located in the Dikti Mountains, within a reasonable distance from Fourni, and it attracts visitors interested in mythology and ancient history.

Fourni is also a great base for exploring other attractions in the Lasithi region. You can visit traditional villages, such as Psychro and Agios Georgios, or explore the Plateau of Lassithi, which is known for its windmills and agricultural activities.

Overall, Fourni offers a glimpse into the authentic Cretan lifestyle and provides an opportunity to immerse yourself in the island’s natural beauty. It’s a charming village that appeals to those seeking tranquility and a closer connection with nature.

Many foreigners have also bought houses in the village and renovated them, and use them for their vacations in the summer months.

The beach of Plaka is not far away, about 12 km (20 minutes by car) . The town of Neapolis where one can find all essentials, including a hospital and bus to Heraklion, Sitia, Ierapetra, Agio Nikolao, is only 8 km away (15 min drive).
