Plaka, Crete has remained for years a hidden gem.
Known only to locals and a few vacationers who seek solitude away from the crowds of Agios Nikolaos and Elounda. It is located only an hour from Heraklion airport and 30 minutes from Agios Nikolaos and it has one of the most picturesque locations on the entire island.
In recent years, it has gained in popularity partly because it served as a setting for a successful Greek tv series “The Island” based on Victoria Hislop’s book of the same name.

Four kms along the coast from the attractive resort of Elounda, Plaka was once a sleepy fishing village. It has grown over the recent years, but still retains a peaceful atmosphere and has a very attractive setting looking out over the Mirabello Bay.
There are several tavernas and cafes, some of which remain open throughout the year plus seasonal shops and services.
To either side of the village lie long pebbly beaches with sweeping curves and clear waters. On the southern side, the beach is home to the beautiful and extensive Blue Palace Resort, however visitors can access the beach by a path near the Church of Agia Marina.
To the northern side of the village is the longest and most accessible beach, with gorgeous views to the island, and space for everyone
There are lovely views over to the historic island of Spinalonga with regular small boat trips there. The village has a jetty from which to moor small boats. There are at least three buses a day to and from Elounda/Aghios Nikolaos.
