This popular fishing village has many surrounding areas to choose from.
The one time sleepy fishing village of Elounda is now a bustling, but charming, little resort on the Bay of Mirabello. Elounda is protected by the Spinalonga Peninsula and the sea here is crystal clear and perfect for snorkeling, water sports or just plain swimming.
The delicious combination of mountains, deep blue and calm sea, fishing harbour and beaches have attracted much media attention in the past and Elounda has been used as a centre for filming, including ‘Who Pays The Ferryman?” and the “The Lotus Eaters”.
The area of Elounda covers several villages. SKISMA is the main resort of Elounda with its harbour, beaches, Square, bars and tavernas, restaurants and shops as well as a bank, doctor and chemist. A good bus service provides transport to Aghios Nikolaos 11 kms away and to Plaka 4 kms distance. There is also a taxi rank.
KATO ELOUNDA (Lower Elounda) and PANO ELOUNDA (Higher Elounda) are the original villages of the area and situated on the hillside with little winding streets, old stone houses and marvelous views over the countryside, sea and mountains.
A little further up are the two hamlets of KATO PINES and PANO PINES with their village and countryside views. These two hamlets retain much of their tranquility and the feeling of time standing still.
Slightly outside Skisma on the way to Plaka is MAVRIKIANO. Once a small hamlet, this has grown in size and is now quite a large village with newly built houses and apartments and renovated older houses.
Four kms from Skisma along the coast is PLAKA. This village is opposite the island of Spinalonga and although the beach is stony, the sea is very clear. Plaka is well known for its fish tavernas.
